xmlns:fb='http://ogp.me/ns/fb#'> Mums Write!: Workshops

Welcome

Many websites provide guidance on writing for publication, formatting manuscripts, and drafting letters to agents. Mums Write! is different. My aim is to encourage family and friends to write for pleasure, for and about the children in their lives. Is publication a worthy goal? Absolutely. Click here to find out why I think it is. But first and foremost, writing for and about children is worthwhile as an end in itself, because it enriches the experience of raising them. I hope you find this site inspiring, and that you share the fruits of your inspiration with the children and children at heart in your world--and with us at MW. Please comment on the postings, or contact me at joanna.norland@gmail.com if you would like to share work to be posted on this site.

Workshops

Fairy Tale Workshop (Part 2)
Sunday, May 13, 7-9 p.m.

The Bell Pub, High Street, Kemsing, TN15 6NB.

Parking off Kemsing High Street

Cost:  £15.

This workshop is a follow up to the fairy tale workshops I offered at Sevenoaks and Kemsing Libraries, in March.  Participants will have an opportunity to share and discuss their pieces from the initial "Point of View" exercise, and to try a second exercise, "Put your child into the fairy tale".  This is also the founding meeting of a writer development group I am offering to complement my structured workshops and courses.

Participation in the prior workshops is recommended, but not essential. Contact me at joanna.norland@gmail.com to register.

Workshop--Creating stories about your children
Friday, June 15, 9:40 - 11:10 a.m.

The House on the Hill Restaurant, 115 London Road, Sevenoaks, Kent, TN13 1BH.

Limited parking outside the restaurant, and around the corner at Pembroke Road Car Park

Cost:  £15.  Tea or coffee on the house (on the Hill).

In this course, you will explore a child in your life as a character.  I will introduce the fundamentals of character-driven narrative through a series of exercises, so that by the end of the workshop, participants should have a story outline, and the beginnings of a story to progress.  You may work on either a children's story, or a story for adults that is about children.  If you e-mail your completed story to me, I will provide written feedback about it.  I hope that in writing about your children, you will make new discoveries about them--and uncover new possibilities for your writing.  All experience levels welcome.

Contact me at joanna.norland@gmail.com to register.

Do you love sharing stories with the children in your life—almost as much as you love telling stories about them?  If you started putting pen to paper, where would those stories lead?

In this 5-week workshop, participants will experiment with various approaches and techniques in a supportive, interactive atmosphere.  I will provide weekly feedback on short take-home exercises, and will meet with each participant individually to discuss your interests and goals as a writer.

Course Outline

Week 1:   The rituals we live by – and the disruptions that shake life up.  Daddy always eats a hardboiled egg for breakfast.  Mummy takes us to piano lessons on Thursday.  Family life is rooted in rituals and routines.  But a sudden break in routine provides the springboard for a thousand stories.  What happens when Daddy starts to juggle his eggs instead of eating them?  Or, he carefully slices the top off his egg shell, and out flies a ...

Week 2: The major milestones. Revisit the key developments in the lives of your children—and your own childhood.  What inspiration do these provide?

Week 3:  Narrative structure — Shaping your material.  Using popular children’s stories as a model, we will explore the principles of narrative structure, with a focus on character-driven plot.  Understanding story structure can help you develop your ideas into gripping narratives, and to improvise with flair when your little ones clamour for a story—preferably, about themselves.

Week 4:  Recording the details. “Vivid detail is the lifeblood of fiction,” explains writing instructor John Gardner.  In this session, we will tap into our trove of observations about our children—their idiosyncrasies and their quirks—to inspire and enrich our writing.

Week 5:  Rhythm and Rhyme. A smorgasbord of approaches to writing children’s poems.
