Welcome to Mums Write! This site is a meeting point for parents and fellow travellers (grandparents, god parents, aunts, uncles, and neighbours-down-the-lane) who love reading and writing—or would love to give it a go—and want to share this love with the children in their lives.
I started MW because I believe that writing for and about children enriches the experience of rearing them, and that engaging with children enriches our writing.
I started MW because I believe that writing for and about children enriches the experience of rearing them, and that engaging with children enriches our writing.
We watch our children more closely, and make surprising discoveries about them, and about ourselves, when we try to describe them on paper, or craft stories and poems that speak to their yearnings. Writing is also the ultimate antidote to parenthood blahs. When I told my 5 year old about his toddler sister winning a gold at the Poolympic Games, I could suddenly see the funny side of Nuclear Nappy week.
What’s more, the children in our lives challenge us to
experiment, stretch, and achieve the assumed-to-be- impossible–whether it’s
volunteering for the mega-death-slide-of-doom at the local swimming pool,
quitting smoking . . . or cranking out that first chapter. So, for parents and fellow travellers who
are new to the page, welcome! There’s
never been a better time—or reason—to write.
I hope you find this site inspiring, and that you share
the fruits of your inspiration with your children, and soulmates. Please also share your thoughts and work with
the Mums Write! community by joining our discussion on Facebook or e-mailing material to me to consider for posting.
Thank you for visting—Joanna
About Me. I am a Kent-based playwright, writing instructor, and mother of two. My plays, including Mothers Have Nines Lives, and Lizzy, Darcy and Jane, have been published and produced throughout the US, the UK, and Australia, and are posted on the ProPlay Website. I began writing stories and poems for the children I babysat two decades ago, and I began making up rhymes for my own duo while they were still in utero (my personal captive audience). As a creative writing instructor, my guiding premise is that writing—like other creative pursuits—fuel mental health and lead to a more fulfilling, intensely experienced life.
Oh so looking forward to reading your book recommendations! I have a one-year old who has shown a very early interest in books - she loves them and loves her bed time stories!
ReplyDeleteThanks very much - Katjaskitchen.com looks great!
Deletebtw, i'm in the process of moving my website to www.mumswrite.com, so future book reviews will be posted there. My 1 y.o. girl is starting to love books as well, which is fun.
